PS3 or…

July 7th, 2006 by grant · 58 Comments

Wondering if the Sony PlayStation3 will be worth the wad of cash you’ll have to cough up for it? Wondering what else you could do with that same wad of cash? The following is a list of some other things (mostly gaming-related) that you could spend your hard-earned $600 (plus or minus $50) on instead of the top-of-the-line PS3 (there is a crippled $500 model — wow, that’s cheap). Sure, the PS3 will be a great machine when it comes out (it had better be), and it’sfuture- proof” (whatever that means), but will owning it be better than owning any of the “bundles” we put together below?

We have used the more expensive 360 bundle where applicable and we had to guess at the cost of the Wii and it’s controllers, but we estimated conservatively.

Other Two Systems

  • The “Other Two Systems” bundle ( $650 ):
  • $250 – Wii (estimated price, could be lower but not higher)
    $400 – XBox360

Okay, this is $50 more than the PS3, but it is still close enough, and you get both of the other systems for around the same price as the PS3.

    And A Friend

  • The “And A Friend” bundle ( $600 ):
  • $250 – Wii
    $260 – 2 DS Lites
    $90 – extra Wii-mote and 2 retro controllers (estimate)

With this bundle you and a friend can be playing games at home or on the road. New Wii games, DS games, or old two-player classics like Contra, Blades of Steel, or Techmo Bowl. This bundle assumes that the Wii will only come with one controller and that the price of extra Wii-motes will be about $40. It also assumes that the price of the retro “shell” will be about $25.

    360 Fanboy

  • The “360 Fanboy” bundle ( $580 ):
  • $400 – XBox360
    $50 – Extra wireless controller
    $70 – XBox360 Live 12 Month Gold Kit
    $60 – 1 Xbox360 game

For less than the PS3 you can get more than everything that you need to be playing HD games. And with the extra $20 you can get some points to spend on XBox Live.

    Wii Fanboy

  • The “Wii Fanboy” bundle ( $570 ):
  • $250 – Wii (estimate)
    $120 – 3 extra Wii-motes (estimate)
    $50 – 2 retro controllers (estimate)
    $150 – 3 Wii games

Wow. Lot of stuff here (a lot of estimates too). You and three friends can enjoy your three new Wii games (Excite Truck, Zelda and Red Steel?) and if you get in the retro mood you can use some of the extra $30 you saved to download some of your old favorites from the Virtual Console. The price of the Wii console will not go above $250 (as stated by Nintendo) and the game price has also been set at $50.

    Pricey PSP

  • The “I Thought The PSP Was Pricey” bundle ( $600 ):
  • $200 – Playstation Portable
    $50 – 1 Gig Memory Stick
$350 – 10 PSP games (at an average cost of $35)

When the PSP came out it seemed kinda pricey, but it dropped $50 and then the PS3 price came out and it really doesn’t look so bad anymore. Especially when you can get all of this for the same price as the PS3 with no games. The new games cost $40, but there are a few older games (like Lumines) that are only $20 so I dropped the average a bit since you have to own Lumines. I could have included UMD movies in this too, but just because you have extra money doesn’t mean you should waste it. ;)

    Wifi

  • The “DS Wi-Fi” bundle ( $590 ):
  • $360 – 12 months of Broadband
    $130 – DS Lite
    $35 – Metriod Prime Hunters
    $35 – Mario Kart DS
    $30 – Tetris DS

Your local price on broadband may vary a bit. Some people may pay $15 a month and some pay $45 a month, so $30 is a good average. If you already have broadband you can spend the money on an extra DS Lite and an extra copy of each of the games to give to a friend. Oh, and you could also get two copies of Lost Magic and Animal Crossings for a total of ten games and two systems.

    Betamax

  • The “Not another BetaMax” bundle ( $600 ):
  • $500 – Toshiba HD DVD player
    $100 – 4 HD DVD Movies

Blu-Ray or HD DVD? Who cares? Neither format really has any of the appeal that DVD did when it replaced VHS, but if you have to be on the cutting edge and want to get the PS3 just for the HD movies then you might want to also look at HD DVD. Also, there’s little doubt that the price on HD DVD players will drop by November, but the PS3 price will not.

The PlayStation3 will undoubtedly be more than just a great game console, and surely millions will be sold. We’re just having a little fun here. So if you want one, by all means hock the car and get one. Everything considered, the PS3 will probably be worth the scratch, but it will be a lot of scratch. Way more than folks are used to ponying up for game consoles, and the PlayStation is a still a game console at heart.

There are a lot of assumptions in this article, but this is just for fun. I also overlooked a few bundles that I could have thrown in here — I had to limit it somewhere. And, yes, those are affiliate links. Bandwidth doesn’t pay for itself, so if you don’t like it don’t click on them.

I’m totally getting the Wii and the 360. As well I think you can lower the cost on the “With a friend bundle” I think it’s safe to say that there will be 2 controllers offered IN with the console. Some of the games actually require two of the controllers anyway “Wii-drums” for one. That’s the only example, but it is a game that uses two of the remote controllers in single player mode. Who knows. There may be more coming out.

But yeah, it’s so true that you can get a lot more of other things for the cost of one playstation 3. and of course, like all past playstations, it will only offer one controller with the system, and no games bundled, AND will not have four controller ports, but the standard, lame, two as always.

I’m not getting a Playstation 3 at all. Just looks lame at this point.

Or get on eBay, buy a Gamecube, a PS2 and an XBOX and ALL of the best games of the current generation.

By the time you’ve finished them, the PS3 might have a reasonable price.

  • 6 Cocanuta // Jul 8, 2006 at 2:30 am

Man, this is great, im not going to be buying any of this stuff as i already have a Xbox 360 ect. But its just so funny to see the amount of things you could get over a PS3…

  • 8 grant // Jul 8, 2006 at 8:28 am

To everyone that mentioned that I should have had a “current gen” combo I apologize. You are correct, that would have indeed been a good addition to the article.

I probably missed quite a few things, but the point is still there…$600 is a lot of money. Hopefully it will be worth it.

What if I want a console with a 60gB HDD, Hi-Def movie players, Wi-Fi, online gaming, and a web browsre? The PS3 is the cheapest option for getting all of these.

The again, I could get 12 Atari 2600’s, or maby 100 packs of cards…..

It’ll be worth it for MGS4… and I hope to God/Buddah/Oogibah that there will be other GREAT games… After I save up enough for the PS3… i’m going to buy 2 or 3 games… then I’m going to start saving up for a Wii… I’m not an Xbox 360 fan, sorry

  • 12 MG // Jul 8, 2006 at 10:19 am

It comes down to what you are getting with the PS3. If you can’t afford it, Buy your 360 or wii, plain and simple. All fan boys should stop talking smack.

You could get a boatload of retro games and systems off ebay for $600. For example:

Super Nintendo with controllers and accessories: $60
    Final Fantasy III: $40
    Mario Kart: $20
Zelda: A link to the past: $20
    10 less popular games: $15 ($1.50 x 10)

  • 16 NatePerfect // Jul 8, 2006 at 3:08 pm

I already have an xbox 360, the 360 is every bit as powerful as the ps3, and the only thing the ps3 hasis final fantasy and mgs 3. you tell me, has ANYONE, and i mean ANYONE seen a game on the ps3 BEYOND these two games? just what do u plan on getting where there isnt even a single game beyond ff13 and mgs 4 you could get? i have a 360 right now, and its flash modded and coupled with cheap as anything malaysian games its ONE PERFECT next gen bundle for me. ESPECIALLY when i can get 8 games in the same price asw one original xbox 360 game. or 4 in the same price as a discounted xbox 360 original title.

“What if I want a console with a 60gB HDD, Hi-Def movie players, Wi-Fi, online gaming, and a web browsre? The PS3 is the cheapest option for getting all of these.”

Well, why not a PC instead? It will be expensive but worth it, and you can do many things more, like being a powerfull HTPC with tons of multimedia options. Or you just can upgrade your current PC to save a few bucks…

And the day I want a Blue-ray, just like I wanted a Betamax or a Minidisc (well, I bought one years ago), I will buy it for my PC. Repeat with me: a console is a console is a console is a console… :)

    Also,
    A single-disc blu-ray player….$1000

And that’s only one componenet of the PS3.

Sony made the decision to go next-generation with its console while the other two main competitors didn’t. In fact, Microsoft knows that they’re at a disadvantage with that, so they had to come up with their own HD-DVD external player.

Stop kidding yourselves of the $600 price tag. A game cost $60 to $70 and an extra controller $50. Hard core gamer buys atleast two games and an extra controller. Average gamer need not apply till price drops or bugs are worked out from the early adapters. (Thank you). This machine is to expensive but people want what they want. Xbox 360 and wii combo is the better deal or an Ipod and wii or hell a Laptop for the price of PS3. (Get that second job)

  • 33 Antonio Rojilla // Jul 9, 2006 at 9:37 am

Yeah, right, and how much was a Betamax? A Minidisc? How many new movies are going to be released in UMD format? LOL! This can be a new disaster for Sony, and they are allready losing a lot of money in many divisions, not to mention that they should sell the PS3 at $900 to recover costs, just imagine if they need to drop the price at $200 to attract casual gamers…

Sorry, but most people isn’t going to pay $600 for a “I don’t need it, I don’t have a HDTV and I don’t know what a it is” Blue-ray player, specially when you can get a Xbox 360 plus a Wii for the same price… Only hard fanboys can support Sony this time, and only they and some rich guys will accept the Blue-ray thing…

Oh, imagine this: a lot of years ago you were to a shop to buy a Nintendo Super NES and the salesman tells you “if you want the SNES you must take this Betamax video too, but it is cheaperthan if you buy the video alone, and believe me it’s better than that VHS fiasco” and you say “oh, yes, if it comes with a Betamax it must be great, that Megadrive sucks because it hasn’t a Betamax, so give me that SNES / Betamax combo, I’m a fanboy and I’m willing to pay just anything”… :)

Repeat again: a console is a console is a console is a console…

  • 34 Spectere // Jul 9, 2006 at 10:52 am

I’m surprised nobody expressed any concern over Sony’s lack of quality control. We all know what happened with the v4 PS2 (you know, the thing that Sony marketed as a “cheap DVD player” as well as a game console) with all of the disc read error garbage. I’ve also witnessed several expensive Sony DVD+-RW drive just die out of nowhere (including my own).

The PS3 is going to be cheaply made, there’s no doubt about it. Sony products as of late simply do not last.

The X360 is deceptively price… I spent more than $600 when I bought it just a month and a half ago, and purchased pretty much the same “package” as outlined above… with a few things added on.

    X-Box Premium: $400
Protection Plan: $50 (this is almost necessary)
    1 Year of XBL: $50
    Ghost Recon: $50
    1 Wireless Controller: $50
    QuickCharge Kit: $30
    Mass. State Sales tax: $50

$680 the first day I bought my X360…

    The following week:
    Rockstar Table Tennis: $40
    Extra Battery for Controller: $20
    Nyco Intercooler: $20

$760 within the first week of buying it, for the most part. I’ve probably dropped close to $1000 on it in the first month of owning it. If I want the HD-DVD Drive when it comes out… bump that up to $860… and considering as I do rosters for NCAA Football, $50 for a memory card and $20 for the transfer kit… that’s $70… so $930.

So, while the PS3 is pretty expensive, it’s not a league above the X360. Many of these things were optional for me, but as I tell all of my friends who are looking ot buy the X360 after playing mine, expect to spend atleast $500 – $600 in the first few weeks… and then anticipate spending more as time goes by.

  • 37 piotrek // Jul 9, 2006 at 7:23 pm

    60Gig Ps3 = $600
    $300 = Ps3
    $300 = Blu-Ray drive (un-necessary)
    Ps3 game = $60
    online gaming = free
    Final price = $660 + tax

    20Gig Xbox 360 (premium) = $400
    Xbox360 game $60
    Gold membership (per year $40)
    Final price = $500 + tax

Sony should just come out with a 3rd entry…. a 60gig Ps3 without the Blu-Ray device, would probably only cost $300.

The Tokyo gameshow will trully reveal wether the Ps3 is worth the 500-600 bucks to get. September should be an interesting month for Sony…it will either make em or break em…..and it seems like everywhere you look its the break em mentality that is winning.

That still leaves the big question. Will PS3 inspite of its steep price be able to beat XBOX 360? The sales of 360 isn’t that great so far, but they have about a year’s lead. If only 360 could come up with some killer games coupled with a price edge, it could be a suicide for PS3… unless ofcourse PS3 has something up its sleeve :)

  • 41 Ground Zero // Jul 10, 2006 at 9:02 am

I don’t have an HDTV yet and I do have a 360 (purchased using game trades during an EBGames promotion). I don’t see any games coming out for the PS3’s launch that I personally consider must haves. I figure I might as well wait until Final Fantasy XIII rolls out before I consider the purchase.

360 will satisfy my next gen needs
I don’t have HDTV to take advantage of Blu Ray
I don’t have the game trades left to finance the purchase
No games out yet worth $600+

I will likely own a PS3 at some point. Just not yet.

  • 42 robcfg // Jul 10, 2006 at 10:17 am

I think sony tries to sell technology ( as it has always do ) and forgets that people like to play and don’t care about how much state-of-the-art-spectacular-new-gadgets are in the console. You only have to see what happened to the PSP, people use it as a Mp3 player…. Sony says “Buy us technology, it’s cool” and Nintendo says “Come and play”. I tried a Wii in some press event and I think PS3 has nothing to do. You buy a PS3, well, you’ll ned a HDTV worth a lot of money and a wonderful sound system. You can play Wii on a regular tv and have fun and buying a lot of accesories will cost you no more then the PS3.

  • 43 Neil D // Jul 10, 2006 at 12:09 pm

Yes. If you don’t have a HDTV and a high end home theater, then you can’t take advantage of all the nice features of PS3. Xbox 360 and PS3 both cost around $600 like some of the reviewers above said. Like always the games decide the winner and PlayStation has consistently had more games and more variety. I’m betting it will be the same for the PS3 and it will have more selection eventually than Xbox 360

Brittlefish has done a price comparison showing various video game bundles you can get for roughly the same price as a Sony Playstation 3, with emphasis on the Xbox 360/Wii package. My favorite is the bundle that nets you a Nintendo DS Lite, three top DS games, and, oh yeah, a year of broadband internet, all for ten dollars less the full-featured PS3.

  • 49 Missing the point // Jul 11, 2006 at 8:36 am

Say that PS3 harware deserves those 600$, even more.
The question is, how you get advantage of it?

Given sony’s policy so far (see PSP and PS2), here is a prediction:
-60Gig Hd, just for the saved games, or photos, or music bought from “selected” sites. (sony will make sure you don’t use your disk for “illegal” purposes, such as backing up movies, or games, or whatever else has real fun)
-BlueRay player (wow!) not out of Sony’s goodness, but as an attempt to control the market with proprietary hardware and force its own standards. Of course, putting inside a proper cd with my photos will be detected as a malicious attempt for piracy! A copied cd! burn it!
-Great CPU, GPU et al: sounds wonderful, but can I use it as I wish? Of course not!
It’s made of sony for sony. You may own it, but sony uses it as it wishes.

My opinion on the whole deal with the ps3 is as follows. I dont have a HDTV, so the blu-ray is something that is useless to me. I was more fortunate than the person who has almost a grand wrapped up in their 360 in this way. I bought the 360 and a game and walked out for like $440 i believe maybe a lil less.

Im an xbox fan ( not quite a fanboy) but i dont see any games that are Must haves for ps3. Hell i barely played my ps2. Me personally i like the 360 wii combo and will probably do that. I will say though maybe the ps3 will be a great console but for value per dollar i think the wii will probably the best there and then 360. I like the route 360 by coming up with the hd-dvd player later on because from working in the industry i know MOST people who play games do not have high definition. Just my .02

    600 McChicken Sandwhiches… that’s like 1.7 a day, something like that, over the course of a year. That’s 629 calories a
    day for a year.

A terrible used car? My friend got a 1987 Cavalier with 40k
miles on it for $400, and it runs pretty well. The extra
$200 could probably cover 5 trips to the gas station,
probably net you 1500-2000 miles of travel. Which means
you could get from almost anywhere in the US to mexico for $600, food excluded.

$600 could get you two months rent in a shitty apartment.

$600 could probably feed a small african village for a year or
    two.

Sony will see to it that ps3 will make sales records..never underestimate the combination of their solid fanbase combined with the spending power of rich gamers who buy anything thats out..microsoft would have to drop the 360 to half price and add full compatibility with ps2 games to hurt their launch.

“360 has hd-dvd but even so most ppl dont have hd tv so ure paying for a blu ray players u wont need. ”

the HD DVD drive for the 360 is not built in dufus.
enjoy swapping disk regularly just to play gears of war, that is if you aren’t forced to buy the HD DvD componnent just to play the game..i’ll go next gen with the Ps3 thank you.
